After shouting, "Whether there will be a year-end bonus for the camera department this year depends on whether it can overtake Huawei." Xiaomi Chairman Lei Jun released a new mobile phone again, this time in the Forbidden City.

On October 25, 2018, Lei Jun was a little excited at the Qianqing Palace outdoor press conference for the release of the magnetically powered slider mobile phone MIX3 in the Forbidden City. He played solo for nearly an hour and a half. When Lei Jun was introducing the rear camera of the phone, two crows suddenly came from the sky. Lei Jun couldn't help but laugh and said that even the birds were affirming the Xiaomi phone. "This is the first outdoor press conference we have held, and it is so interesting."

On the morning of the 25th, Xiaomi Group announced that it expected mobile phone shipments to exceed 100 million units by the end of October, completing its full-year target for 2018 two months ahead of schedule.

Lei Jun said at the press conference that the gap between large mobile phone manufacturers and small manufacturers will widen this year. The main reason is that each company has different investment costs in cameras and AI. In May this year, Lei Jun announced in an internal letter that he would establish a separate camera department within the mobile phone department to pool the company's superior resources to improve the camera quality of Xiaomi phones.

Lei Jun once told his colleagues in the camera department that whether there will be a year-end bonus for the camera department this year depends on whether it can overtake Huawei. The latest results were updated on the afternoon of the 25th. Xiaomi MiX3 surpassed Huawei P20 with a score of 103.

High growth in the future may not rely on mobile phones but on IoT

Beijing News: Xiaomi has maintained rapid growth in the past eight years. Can it still achieve very high growth rates in the future?

Lei Jun: We are very confident in Xiaomi’s rapid growth in the future. First of all, the mobile phone industry is a huge market. In 2017, a total of 1.47 billion mobile phones were sold globally, and Xiaomi sold more than 90 million units. With the advent of the 5G era, the mobile phone market may once again usher in growth. Although it will not grow as fast as in the past, even if this market stops growing, there is still huge room for growth for Xiaomi.

Secondly, in addition to mobile phones, Xiaomi has extensive layout in the fields of smart hardware and consumer upgrades. It has entered more than 100 categories and built the world's largest IoT platform. With the advent of the AI era, AI+IoT will generate huge value, and Xiaomi already has some advantages.

In addition, Xiaomi has huge opportunities in overseas markets. Xiaomi mobile phones have entered 74 countries and regions, and there are still many markets to enter, and many of our categories have not yet entered the global market. As Xiaomi enters new markets step by step and does a good job in the new market, II feel that Xiaomi still has more than ten times room for growth in the future.

Beijing News: We noticed that Xiaomi is also developing smart homes. Do you think smart home is a false proposition? What do you think about this issue?

Lei Jun: "Smart home" is not a new term. It existed abroad twenty years ago, but it has not been promoted. We think the main reason behind this is that the commercial and technical channels are not connected. For example, in the past, the cost of smart homes was very high, and the home had to be renovated, which was unaffordable for consumers. In addition, it was difficult for products from different manufacturers to interconnect.

Xiaomi did two things to solve the problem. First, we made each of our products smart. After consumers bought them home, they suddenly discovered that they had realized smart homes. This was a straightening out of business channels. In addition, we have made an interconnection module, which has also been technically connected. Xiaomi smart home products are produced by many different companies, but as long as this module is used, they can be interconnected.

Smart home is just in its infancy, and Xiaomi has just crossed the threshold. In the future, the development space of smart home may be far beyond our imagination.

Beijing News: Some people say that Xiaomi’s ecological products are just micro-innovations. What do you think of this issue?

Lei Jun: Judging from our entrepreneurial experience, there are unknown hardships behind success. Even a little achievement requires a huge effort. So I think we should not underestimate micro-innovation. In order to improve the consumer experience, even if it is only 1%, we have invested 100% of our energy.

Xiaomi is determined to become a great Internet company, allowing everyone in the world to enjoy the wonderful life brought by technology. Only when we go all out and do every little thing well can we be on the right path.

The next Internet wave is artificial intelligence

Beijing News: How do you view the development of the Internet in China over the past 20 years? If you use several key points in time to divide it, how would you divide it?

Lei Jun: I think Apple's launch of the iPhone in 2007 was a very important event. The emergence of smartphones has greatly changed the Internet. I believe that mobile phones will gradually replace personal computers, and the era of mobile Internet will come. Xiaomi was founded in 2010 and launched the first-generation Xiaomi mobile phone in 2011. We have promoted the rapid popularization and quality improvement of smartphones in China. The booming development of mobile payment, e-commerce, social networks, short videos and other industries in China all rely on the huge mobile Internet population. Xiaomi has made some contributions in this regard.

Beijing News: What will be the next wave of the Internet? Under this wave, what are Xiaomi’s opportunities?

Lei Jun: The era of artificial intelligence has arrived, and artificial intelligence is also Xiaomi's most important strategy. We have four huge advantages: user base, massive devices, massive data, and awareness of the entire AI era. We have long attached importance to cloud services and big data.

The breakthrough point chosen by Xiaomi is IoT, which is the Internet of Everything. I believe that the combination of AI and IoT will form AIoT, which is the intelligent interconnection of all things. There is huge room for development in this field in the future. Xiaomi has built the world's largest consumer Internet of Things, connecting 115 million smart devices (excluding mobile phones, tablets and laptops). Xiaomi's artificial intelligence assistant Xiao Ai has more than 30 million monthly active devices and a monthly wake-up count of more than 10billion times, and the cumulative number of wake-ups exceeds 5 billion times.

"My experience as an angel investor taught me how to look for opportunities"

Beijing News: Since the Jinshan era, the industry has evaluated you as a model IT worker. What do you think of this evaluation?

Lei Jun: If we want to realize a different dream and don’t pay more than others, how can we succeed? I still believe that starting a business is not glamorous, and successful entrepreneurs are not as easy to succeed as everyone thinks. Even a little achievement requires a lot of hard work. On the road to success, the only secret is to work seriously and hard.

Beijing News: How helpful is being an angel investor in starting Xiaomi? What is the biggest difference in the way entrepreneurs and investors think?

Lei Jun: Because what angel investors do is to look at the general trend and look for opportunities. What do I think starting a business will look like five years from now? What will it look like ten years from now? What is the right thing to do and what is the right point in time?

I was a mobile phone enthusiast and believed that mobile Internet access was the future trend. The next 10 years would be the world of mobile Internet. Then I thought about what should I do? So I used my identity as an investor to see who was doing the mobile Internet and to figure out what the mobile Internet was. In the process, we became more and more convinced of the future of the mobile Internet, and finally decided to start Xiaomi in 2010.
